Parents focus of MCS workshops

(WMC-TV) – Memphis City Schools is in the business of educating the city’s children, but the district will turn its attention to adults this weekend.

MCS will host its annual Exceptional Children Parent Summit on May 19 at 2 p.m. at Colonial Middle School.

MCS cafeterias now serving healthier meals

(WMC-TV) – A 13-minute YouTube video is highlighting some positive changes going on in cafeterias across Memphis schools.

The video was produced by a division of the American Egg Board, a group responsible for marketing eggs.

The video shows how Tony Geraci, director of Memphis City Schools’ Child Nutrition Services, has introduced fresh produce into the diet of the district’s 100,000 students.

Wooddale seniors to speak at U.S. Senate reception

Darius Hooker and Wesley Carter, Wooddale High School seniors, have been invited to deliver a keynote speech during the U.S. Senate Breakfast Reception on Friday, May 11, 2012.

Hooker and Carter are traveling to Washington D.C. as participants in the 2012 Team America Rocketry Challenge. These two students will be honored and recognized as accomplishments of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in our nation’s high schools.

MCS to participate in ‘Let’s Move’ fitness initiative

On Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m., students, parents and MCS staff will participate in the district’s largest flash mob to be held simultaneously at Halle, Crump and Melrose Stadiums.

Students will also compete in various sporting events designed to motivate them about exercise.

Jay-Z offering scholarships to needy students

(WMC-TV) - You might wonder how at-risk youngsters in Memphis in the Mid-South might benefit via a connection to rap music royalty. Keep reading because Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, wants to offer a bit of his wealth to young people who generally have zero chance when it comes to college scholarships.

Jay-Z's foundation offers help to select young people who want to improve their education and make their own contributions to the community.

New sidewalks for Highland Oaks Elementary School students

(WMC-TV) - Thousands of dollars have been dedicated for sidewalks near Highland Oaks Elementary School in southeast Shelby County.

A statement, just released from the Shelby County Mark Luttrell's office, provides more details on the project. It reads as follows:

Shelby County Government has recieved a $249,000 grant from The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to complete sidewalk construction along a one mile stretch of Holmes Road.
