MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) As the Memphis City Council tries to balance the budget, some libraries are facing the possibility of being permanently shut down. Community centers and city pools could also experience some slicing and dicing.
There are seven Memphis libraries that could be permanently closed. One library, the Highland Branch Library, already closed in November.
But now, six more libraries could go under Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's proposed budget: Crossitt, Poplar-White Station, Levi and Gaston Park branches, as well as two others that are still unidentified.
The administration says the closures could save more than $1.5 million.
The cuts may not stop there.
City pools and community centers may lose a day on their schedules.
The budget calls for community centers to close on Saturdays, which would save more than $660,000.
