Sweet-toothed suspect arrested for stealing nearly $2K in candy

A Mid-South man is facing charges Friday after having a sweet tooth.

Jeff Strokes is accused of stealing eight cases of Hershey candy from the Lanter Distribution Center off Democrat Road in Memphis.

According to the police affidavit, the candy was worth nearly $2,000.

The affidavit states Stokes was a former employee of the distribution center.

Stokes now face a theft of property charge.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man wanted on a variety of crimes including criminal trespass.

Terrell Meeks, 18, is wanted for evading arrest, possession with intent to sell marijuana, unlawful possession of a weapon, criminal trespass, and resisting arrest.

Meeks has also been charged with attempted second degree murder, robbery, and theft of property over $500 in three unrelated cases.

He is wanted as of March, 27, 2013 in the Hickory Hill area.

Sheriff’s Office to conduct DUI checkpoints

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be conduct two sobriety checkpoints this Friday night, March 15, 2013, in an effort to battle impaired driving on county roadways.

The first of the two checkpoints will be conducted at the intersection of Hacks Cross and Meadow Vale from 8:30 until 10:30 p.m.

The second of the checkpoints will occur at the intersection of Hacks Cross and Lowrance from 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.

More than 16,000 people are killed every year in the United States due to impaired driving.  Another 305,000 injuries occur due to impaired driving.  Twenty-seven percent of those killed on Tennessee highways are crashes where alcohol was involved.

The checkpoints are fully funded by federal grant dollars.
