The American Red Cross conducted a fire safety blitz Saturday to commemorate the birthday of Dr. King.
The Red Cross partnered with Hope Worldwide and The Memphis Fire Department to go door to door and make sure residents are prepared to prevent and respond to fires.
"Just various questions, do they a working smoke detector? Are the batteries good in the smoke detector, would they like to have the fire department come check and we've got firefighters working with us today who will go in check batteries and even install a new smoke detector for them," said Laura Vaughn from the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross also reminded residents to make sure space heaters have at least three feet of empty space around them.
Space heaters are one of the most common causes of residential fires in Memphis.
