Man recovering after legs severed while fixing flat

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A man is recovering at The MED in satisfactory condition after both his legs were severed while fixing a flat in the Southwind area Wednesday night.

Michael Owens, 38, was fixing a tire going westbound on Winchester Road.

Owens called for help from a friend. When the friend arrived, he parked his vehicle behind Owens with his flashers on.

A short time later a Ford F -150 made full impact with the rear of the second vehicle which drove it into the Camry while Owens was standing at the trunk.

The impact severed his legs and pinned him under the vehicle. He was then airlifted to the Med in extremely critical condition.

The accident scene is a reminder for drivers to watch out on the road, and pull over to avoid a crash.

Mike Steele with Grimes Tires said the best thing you can do is get out of the car through the passenger side door, and call for help.

Former teacher in jail for soliciting boys, to be released

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - It's a case that shocked the community — a teacher sent to jail for inappropriate behavior, and Thursday he will be back on the streets.

After taking a best-interest Alford plea, a now former teacher accused of soliciting boys is about to go free.

Darrin Miller taught theater at Sheffield High School until November 2011 when he was arrested at his home.

He was accused of driving around town in his purple Chevy Cobalt, and offering teenage boys money for sex.

December 2012, he pleaded guilty to some of the 10 charges against him.

He got a six year sentence, all six suspended, with eight years probation too.

He's due to be released on Thursday after only about 15 months in jail.

Prosecutors said they accepted Miller's guilty plea because the parents of the teenage victims did not want them to testify in open court. The sentence is the sole discretion of the judge.
