Students on spring break help out in Hickory Hill

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A group of college students is using spring break to sing, cook, and comfort senior citizens dealing with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Students from an organization called Christ in Youth's Engage paid a visit to Dorothy's Place in Hickory Hill Thursday.

"When we have volunteers like this, we can do activities that are a little bit more challenging," explained Ruth Ann Shelton, Dorothy's Place.

Each year, members of Christ in Youth's Engage spend their spring break participating in community service projects across the country.

"We worked with SuCasa Ministries, we got to work with Urban Farms, got to hang out with some kids," said student Evan Maines.

Even though the students were at Dorothy's Place to help, they were also learning at the same time.

Memphis church uses new app to rate preacher

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A Hickory Hill area church has a new app and a new way of communicating with members. Many members think it is making it the church of the future.

Minutes after Sunday services ended at Jesus People Church this weekend, members were able to go to their phones and computers and click on their church's new app.

It allows them to fill out surveys that tells the minister everything from whether they liked the service to how they feel about how the church's operations.

"So it helps me target our weaknesses and turn our weaknesses into strengths," said minister Gerald Kiner.

Kiner introduced his church to their new app several days ago.

It allows members to make their comments anonymously. Kiner said one thing he has learned so far is that members want to see more activities for the large number of young people who attend services.

Teen charged with arson, murder of mom faces judge

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - The teen accused of setting a fire in his home leading to the death of his own mother spoke with a juvenile court judge Saturday morning.

According to the 14-year-old boy's stepfather, the teen appeared before a judge Saturday – but no action will be taken until Monday. The 14-year-old is still locked up at juvenile hall.

The boy admitted to starting the fire inside this Shelby County home Friday in the 4700 block of Bethay Drive. That fire killed his mother Gwendolyn Wallace.

Fire investigators said the fire was set with some kind of accelerant at the bottom of the staircase. It was fast-moving and created a lot of smoke.

The teen is charged with first degree murder and aggravated arson – behavior his stepfather said is shocking.
