Solid waste collection schedule for 4th of July holiday

The City of Memphis government will observe the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 5.  Residents of Memphis serviced by the city whose regular collection day is Monday will receive garbage and recycling collection on Tuesday, July 6.

There will be little or no collection of yard debris and excess trash outside carts on Tuesday as crews concentrate on servicing Monday and Tuesday garbage carts only.  Residents are reminded that collection of debris and excess trash may be limited all week.

Greater Middle Baptist Church installs new minister

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A new era began Sunday at the church founded by the late Dr. Benjamin Hooks when members of Greater Middle Baptist Church officially installed Reverend Robert Lewis Mason as their new pastor.

Reverend Mason began his new job with lots of support from the Greater Middle Baptist congregation.

Memphis resident wants help with trashed-out neighborhood

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An Action News 5 viewer is tired of dealing with her trashed-out neighborhood.

At first glance, it looks like someone just pushed their clothing out of the windows of a vacant house in the Davidson subdivision near Orange Mound before moving out.

Friday, DeLois Casey said she recently complained to the city's code enforcement office, but nothing happened.

Four-year-old drowns overnight in Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A four-year-old child died early Friday morning in what Memphis police are calling an accidental drowning.

Officials tell Action News 5 that police and rescue crews were called to a home in the 7200 block of Country Oaks Drive just after 1:00 a.m.

There, a group of children were spending the night, and went out for a swim in a backyard pool.  When the group returned, they realized one of the children was missing.

"We found that some children had gone swimming and they missed one child," said Major Charles Newell of the Memphis Police Department. "The father went back out and found him at the bottom of the pool."

Local chef seeks to become Oprah's next TV star

Chef Elle Green first became known when she started presenting simple recipes on Live at 9 in June 2007. Yet, after receiving positive responses from both viewers and the show's hosts, she realized she wanted to take her passion for cooking one step further.  

"We get tons of it (e-mails) every time she's on," Executive Producer Jennifer Cates said. "I can't tell you how much time I spend responding to each and every e-mail."

Taking Back Our Neighborhoods: Orange Mound clean-up

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Ignoring the heat, volunteers in Orange Mound spent Wednesday cleaning up, part of an ongoing effort aimed at Taking Back Our Neighborhoods.

Representatives of Orange Mound Outreach Ministries spent the day in the thick of their "I Love Orange Mound" summer clean up.

Mason to succeed Hooks at Greater Middle Baptist

Greater Middle Baptist Church welcomes its new Pastor, Rev. Robert Lewis Mason, who succeeds the late Rev. Benjamin L. Hooks as Pastor.  Rev. Mason is former pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA.  He has also pastored churches in Pittsfield, MA and White Plains, NY.  

He is a native of Memphis, TN and a graduate of Carver high School '66.  Greater Middle Baptist Church is proud and honored to open its arms to Rev. Mason, his wife Doris Mason and their two (2) daughters-Jessett and Lauren.  We will have a "Celebration of Installation for Rev. Mason on June 27, 2010 at 3:30 pm in the Sanctuary of Greater Middle Baptist Church, 4982 Knight Arnold Road (at Clearbrook).
