MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton called out Congressman Steve Cohen on the campaign trail Saturday as the two showed up to vote early.

Hundreds showed up for a rally in the heart of Herenton country.  The former mayor boarded a bus after speaking, en route to cast an early vote at the election commission Downtown.

There, Herenton almost came face-to-face with incumbent Cohen who had just delivered a bus load of his own supporters.

"Tell Cohen he's a Congressman," Herenton said.  "He don't need to peep out of a car."

Vet discusses dangers of canine heat stroke

The summer heat has set in, which means pet owners need to take precautions to ensure their dogs do not suffer from heat stroke.

According to Dr. Carr Kelsey of the Kelsey Canine Medical Center in Collierville, dogs struggle with heat just as much as humans. They can suffer from heat stroke and heat exhaustion in just a short period of time.

Dogs already have a higher normal body temperature than humans of around 101.5°F. Unlike people, dogs have very limited sweat glands located in the pads of their paws. These glands can not sufficiently cool the dog off, which is why they also pant.

MPD invites residents to participate in 'National Night Out'

The Memphis Police Department invites all Memphis communities and neighborhoods to join them as they participate in "National Night Out" on August 3.

"NNO" began in 1983 and is held annually on the first Tuesday in August. The local goal of "NNO" is to unite Memphis residents and create strong community bonds, while building safer neighborhoods.

The event was designed to (1) heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in local anticrime programs; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
